Our #WCW this week goes to the legendary Diahann Carroll, 78! Over the years Diahann Carroll has continued to be an inspiration, starting her career as a model as a teenager, then to stage plays and then going on to be the 1st black actress to star on her own television show (JULIA, 1968 ) where she wasn’t playing a maid or nanny!
I 1st became familiar with Ms. Caroll through her role as Dominque Devereaux , on DYNASTY (1984-1987), although I wasn’t even born when the show 1st started. As I got older, I would watch re-runs with my grandmother, who was a fan and I was amazed by this woman who “looked like me” dressed in her jewels, fancy dresses and furs!
Later on in the 1990′s, Carroll played mom to Whitley Gilbert on hit show, A Different World. Since then Ms. Caroll has appeared on popular dramas, GREYS ANATOMY & WHITE COLLAR and will return to the stage this year as Mama in THE RAISIN IN THE SUN!
