Meet this week’s SUPERGORGE Of The Week, BET producer and host Angel Elliott!
IASG: How did you start as a producer for BET?
ANGEL: So unlike the other interns, I stayed late, came on weekends to finish my assignments, traveled with the team on my own dollar. I made sure I was an essential part of the team so that when my internship was over, they’d know they couldn’t do without me. Luckily, then Sen. Barack Obama announced his intention to run for president and BET News kicked our political coverage into high gear. So, they hired me! I got to produce my own special, on my own for the network at 20. I worked my way up and here I am!
IASG: That’s amazing. Policitics is something that a lot of 20 year olds don’t have on the top of their to do list. With the upcoming election, how important do you feel like it is for young people to get out and vote?
ANGEL: It’s SO important. We’re voting for our future, our children’s future. How someone couldn’t care about their plight and give up their right to participate in this country’s democratic process confuses me. I hate to hear people say “one vote doesn’t count” because NO vote is a vote. Voting is our civil right, a privilege our ancestors fought and died for. The next four
IASG: Speaking of the future and children, do you see yourself married and a mom and time soon??
ANGEL: Hahah! Well, right now, my career is my boyfriend. I’m so focused on building my legacy that I haven’t given so much thought to a relationship – and timing is an issue. I’d love to be married and be a mom eventually when the time is right, and I have time to give! And oh yeah, when the right person happens in my life, lol.
IASG: If you weren’t producing. what career path would you have taken?
ANGEL: I would have been a singer honestly. People that knew me in high school and even college always expected me to have won a Grammy by now, lol. I’m a classically trained vocalist, I studied opera and chamber music, at the Peabody Institute for seven years. Music is my first love, then journalism, then politics.
IASG: What type of singer would you have been?? Can we expect an Angel Elliott album in the future??
ANGEL: I would have been a hybrid of Ella Fitzgerald, Pat Benatar & Bey. To be completely honest I’m working on some things. I figure I should pursue every dream while I’m young.
IASG: How would you describe your fashion style?
ANGEL: My fashion style is urban couture with a touch of boho, I hate using “edgy” but that a perfect adjective to describe it. But at work, when I have to do interviews on the hill or meet with corporate types I’m still conservative in suits, but add my personal style by rocking haute heels.
IASG: What item in your closet will you never get rid of?
ANGEL: Hmmm…. I would never get rid of my Manolo Blahnik ‘Hangis’ Jeweled Pumps. A.k.a the “something blue” heels from the first Sex in the City movie. When I saw that movie, I thought they were so gorgeous. They were the first pair of expensive designer shoes I bought for myself, sans parental assistance… I bought them when I was 20 in 2008, from one of my first paychecks at BET. Some folks would call that frivolous. But I bought them to remind me of where I’d been, and what I should continue to aspire to.
IASG: What trends are you most excited for for Fall?
ANGEL: I’m so excited for this fall’s trends! Oxblood, baroque, studded accessories, but most of all leather. I love leather anything. And I love that the sexy, feminine heels with the slightly pointed toe are making a comeback. That lower heel will save a lot of ankles this winter! Lol!
IASG: What advice would you give to today’s young girls/women?
ANGEL: The advice I would give today’s girls and women is this: A lot of people will try their hardest to compromise your values and morals, they’ll call you old fashioned and archaic, they’ll say you’re “stuck up,” but don’t forsake who you are for anyone! It’s okay to use discernment and shirk status quo! It’s okay not to show everything. Using your brain is beautiful, it will get you much further then using your body. Create a legacy for yourself and your future progeny. Learn to step into uncomfortabilit
